Experimental Double-blind Study:  100 pts. with acute viral hepatitis were given P. amarus in capsules containing powdered whole plants, 900 mg. t.i.d or placebo for 7 days.  There was a significant reduction (p=0.003) in the duration of the disease in the P. Amarus group. P. amarus significantly reduced the duration of the disease of those with acute hepatitis, especially non A and B hepatitis, but not those with acute hepatitis B Narendranathan M, Mini PC, Remla A. A trial of Phyllanthus Amarus in acute viral hepatitis. J  Clin Epidemiol 50(1), 1997).

Picrorrhiza kurroa

The roots and leaves of Picrorrhiza kurroa have been used extensively Aryuvedic medicine in the treatment of hepatic and respiratory disease.

Experimental Study: 30 pts.with infectious hepatitis received Picorrhiza kurroa.  There was a rapid fall in bilirubin levels clinical recovery was more rapid than expected. (Chaturvedi GN, Singh RH. Jaundice of infectious hepatitis and its treatment with an indigenous drug Picorrhiza kurroa.  A review of thirty cases and clinical trial. J Res Indian Med 1:1, 1966).

Silymarin

Silymarin is complex derived from milk thistle (Silybum marianum)

Experimental double blind study: 106 consecutive pts. with liver disease were selected on the basis of elevated transaminase levels.  In general, pts. had relatively slight acute and subacute liver disease, mostly induced by alcohol abuse.  Normalization of histological changes occurred significantly more often in the treated group. than in the controls.

ULCERS-GASTRIC AND DUODENAL

Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice (DGL)

Experimental Study: 40 pts. with chronic duodenal ulcers of 4-12 years duration and over 6 relapses during the previous year received DGL.  Half received 3 gm. daily for 8 wks.: the other half received 4.5 grams for 16 weeks.  All 40 displayed significant improvement usually within 5-7 days and none required surgery during a 1 yr. follow-up.  The higher dosage was significantly more effective. (Tewari SN, Wilson AK.  Deglycrrhizinated licorice in duodenal ulcer. Practitioner 210:820-5, 1972).

Mastic

A concrete resinous exudate from the stem of the tree Pistacia lentiscus, chewed traditionally for reducing breath odor as well as for other uses.

Oral administration as powder or by chewing may treat benign gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Experimental Double-blind Study: 38 pts. with symptomatic and endoscopically proven duodenal ulcers received orally either mastic or placebo 1 gm . daily over 2 weeks.  Symptomatic relief was obtained in 16(80%) on mastic and 9(50%) pts. on placebo, while endosmotically proven occurred in 14 pts. (70%) of mastic and 4 pts.(22%) on placebo.  Mastic was well tolerated and did not produce side effects. (Al-Habbal MJ, Al-Habbal Z, Huwez FU.  A double blind controlled clinical trial of mastic and placebo in the treatment of duodenal ulcer. Clin Exp Pharmacol Physiol 11(5)|541-4,1984).
